How to Properly Brush Your Teeth

Brushing is a universal habit and is even considered to be the most widely practised health habit that people do on a daily basis. It is important that we brush our teeth the proper way to maintain and even improve oral health. Here are the basics when it comes to brushing our teeth:

1. Choosing The Right Toothbrush

Most people don’t know this but it’s true that not all toothbrushes are created equally. There are toothbrushes that are inferior in quality and are linked to teeth and gum damage. Having the wrong brush can cause sensitivity and even more serious problems. A safe toothbrush should have the following characteristics:

  • Rounded bristles: to protect the enamel and soft tissue of the gum
  • Small head size: for the brush to reach difficult areas
  • Non-frayed bristles: to remove the plaque
  • Antibacterial: to prevent bacteria from entering your bloodstream

2. Choosing The Right Toothpaste

Another necessary product that we use when brushing is toothpaste. Up until recently, consumers rarely pay attention to what toothpaste they’re using. However, when choosing the right toothpaste it is necessary to consider the facts before buying. It is recommended that the toothpaste you use is made from materials approved by the relevant licensing agencies, are not too abrasive and have the appropriate concentration of fluoride.

3. Time and consistency is KEY

Be consistent with your oral care routine. Brushing your teeth should be done twice a day for at least two minutes. Never skip brushing if you don’t want to have plaque and bacteria in your mouth.

  • Brushing in the morning: Bacteria may develop in your mouth overnight, even if you haven’t consumed anything before sleeping. Brushing in the morning also increases the production of saliva which helps protect your teeth from acidic or corrosive food.
  • Brushing in the evening: After your last meal of the day, it is necessary that you brush your teeth. The ideal time to brush one’s teeth is 20 minutes after the meal. This is to remove all of the residues from the food you consumed throughout the day. This way, the bacteria in your mouth will have nothing to feed on and they can’t release acids that may break down tooth enamel and cause cavities.

4. The Right Technique

You’ve probably heard ‘place your toothbrush at a 45 degrees angle’. This meant that you have to aim for the area where the gums and the teeth meet. This is the place where food particles stack up and you have to remove these. This angle also lessens the risk of damage to your teeth and gums as it allows a gentler approach.

When brushing, do it in a circular massaging motion and do not apply a lot of pressure to your teeth. The gentler you brush, the better the result. Also, remember not to squeeze your toothbrush and just allow the bristles to do their job.

These are just some of the basic tips when it comes to brushing your teeth. Remember that having a good oral hygiene is the first step to having good oral health.
